## Steps To Calculate Cylinder Cubic Yardage

Let us learn the step-by-step procedure to calculate cylinder volume in cubic yardage.

### Finding out the dimensions

A cylinder shape has two essential dimensions: Height and Radius. Radius determines the extent of the circular portion of the cylinder, whereas height tells you how long it is.

If you do not already know the diameter and depth of the cylindrical shape, you may have to measure it first. Construction staff usually measures radius in inches and height in yards or feet.

If you already know the diameter of the cylinder, you can find the radius by making it half or divide by two as follows:

Radius = Diameter / 2

E.g., If the diameter is 42 inches, then the radius is 42/2 = 21 inches.

### Converting Measurements Into Yards

For the sake of uniformity, you need to convert the dimensions into standard yard units to know the cylinder cubic yardage. You have to convert inches, meters, and feet into yards, which we have already discussed in other articles.

To calculate the volume of curved or circular areas, mathematicians often use the “Pi” Value. Pi stands for 22/7 or 3.142 approx.

Cylinder Cubic Yardage = Pie x R x R x H

If the radius is 1 yard and height is 14 yard, the cylinder cubic yardage = 22/7 x 1 x 1 x 14 = 44 cubic yards or 44 Yd^{3}.

You can calculate the cost of filling material by multiplying the cubic yardage of the cylinder by the price per cubic yard. So if I have to pay $ 20 per cubic yard for concrete (A hypothetical figure) for filling, then my estimated cost is 44 x 20 = $880.

### Illustrative Example

Let us take a real-life example to understand the calculation of cylinder cubic yardage.

Imagine you want to erect 20 cylindrical pillars for your construction project. All of them have the same height and radius.

They are 7 yards long and have a diameter of 144 inches. What will be the concrete filling cost if one cubic yard of Concrete material costs $ 30 per cubic yard (Hypothetical)

Height of each pillar = 7 yards

For finding the radius, first of all, convert the diameter from inches to yards. So 144 inches = 4 yards.

Radius of each pillar = Diameter / 2 = 4/2/ = 2 yards

Pi = 22/7

Cylinder Cubic Yardage of one pillar = Pie x R x R x H = 22/7 x 2 x 2 x 7 = 88 cubic yards or 88 Yd^{3}.

Cylinder Cubic Yardage of 20 pillars = 88 x 20 = 1760 cubic yards or 1,760 Yd^{3}.

Total cost of filling concrete to 20 pillars = 1,760 x 30 = $52,800.

### Points to Consider

In a construction project environment, stockout costs can be pretty high. Hence we recommend you to consider a plus tolerance of 5% to 10% in cubic yardage (depending upon the type of material) so that you are not short of material for filling cylinder shapes because sometimes measurements can be a little off. For concrete, it is half to one yard extra.

Similarly, this safety tolerance can account for the loss of entrained air, spreading of forms, settlement, over-excavation, spillage, waste, or any other changes in volume in different types of materials.

Also, it would be best if you took the correct measurements. Hence, physically checking instead of imagining the actual thickness may save you from running short on concrete.

### Convert Cubic inches or Cubic Feet

If you use inches or feet for your calculations, don’t worry. You can still find the cylinder cubic yardage. In the case of cubic inches, divide the figure by 1728, and in the case of cubic feet, divide by 27. It is as simple as that.
